The small gravel parking lot adjacent to Bull Creek's one-story clubhouse doesn't hold a lot of cars, but there's a steady procession of traffic, even in the heat of summer.īull Creek is one of only four black-owned golf courses in the United States, according to former LPGA tour member Renee Powell. Then, outside Louisburg, just over a hill on rural Massenburg-Baker Road, the course emerges from the trees. Golfers looking for the 18-hole public-private course about 30 miles northeast of Raleigh might be inclined to give up their search.
In 1992, the 11 property owners agreed that Massenburg should turn it into a golf course, and the families came up with $1 million to get started.ĭespite their inexperience with golf - never mind course-building - Massenburg and the others seem to be doing fine in their nearly 7-year-old enterprise. Six families - the Massenburgs, Solomons, Keiths, Stricklands, Bridgeses and Browns - used to live on the farmland that now makes up Bull Creek. "All we could hear was that we were crazy, didn't know what we were doing," he said. "I don't know and I have wondered from that day on why did I say yes - and I've never even hit a golf ball, even up until now," says the 77-year-old Massenburg, principal owner of Bull Creek Golf and Country Club. Then a few of his relatives suggested a new use for the rolling land: Plow the crops under and build a golf course.
Warren Massenburg once had nearly 200 acres of tobacco, cotton, corn and hogs, but no one who seemed interested in taking it over someday, when he wasn't around any more.
